When researching your high definition home theater system, there are always questions to keep in mind. Which type of high definition television should be at the top of your list.

Many people are happy with a plasma high definition television. Some are happier with an LCD, liquid crystal display, unit. Before you run off to your local superstore to grab your own high definition television set for your home theater system, make sure you do your homework so that you know which one will better suit your needs.

LCD, liquid crystal display, high definition television sets are generally cheaper than their plasma counterparts. LCD screens are made up of sandwiches, which are made up of liquid crystal pushed in the space between two glass plates. Even when one half of the sandwich is broken, you will still see a picture, because LCD uses backlighting to shine through the gases, to make the picture. In this way, LCD never has dead pixels, so you still get a nice high definition picture for your home theater. It’s a good fall back.

Plasma screens use a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create a picture. Should a pixel fail, it will turn black. A lot of people don’t use them in their high definition home theaters mainly for this reason. However, if you look beyond the dead pixel issue, you might find that plasma screen high definition television sets are a better bang for your buck.

Many people prefer plasma screens for their high definition home theaters because plasma displays a much crisper, sharper black tone. For movies that have a lot of dark scenes, this equates to a much neater, clearer visual experience. Due to the backlighting that LCD uses, this means that black is still semi-lit, making dark tones spread into light ones, commonly blurring the image a bit. However, LCD is working to improve its high definition capability in sharpness of image.

Aside from better contrast thanks to its ability to show deeper blacks, a plasma screen will often have better viewing angles than LCD. Viewing angles are how far you can sit on either side of a screen before the picture’s quality is affected.

However, what a plasma lacks is resolution, and if your home theater setup requires at least 1080pi, your high definition set of choice is LCD. They can easily hold to the 1080pi high definition threshold.

When selecting components for your home theater you will come to a point in time when you must decide on which type and size of television you will need for the best possible viewing experience. There are many types of televisions on the market today and technology is constantly evolving and emerging in order to bring newer, bigger, and better televisions to a market that one would think is already saturated.

The good news is that the very nature of this market makes yesterdays cutting edge technology today’s bargain of the day. The very brevity of new technology in the electronics industry works in favor of consumers by driving prices down rather quickly. Nothing is entirely out of reach for the average consumer for too terribly long. For this reason you can afford to be fairly selective when choosing components for your home theater. This selectiveness just so happens to extend to televisions sets as well.

There are basically three types of television sets burning up the home theater market today. Those types of televisions include the following: plasma, rear project, or front projection television. Each of these have distinct advantages and disadvantages when it comes to home theater.

Plasma Televisions

These televisions often provide the best quality when it comes to picture. Their designs make them ideal for watching movies that are formatted for wide screen viewing and they have a much larger viewing area than traditional televisions and they also come in a wide variety of sizes in order to adapt to many types of home theater needs. The single largest problem with these types of televisions is the price, which can be quite prohibitive, particularly as you consider the larger sized televisions.

Rear Projection Televisions

Rear projection televisions offer a great deal of quality at a much lower price than plasma televisions. With these types of televisions the image is projected and reflected from the back of the television. One of the major disadvantages for rear projections televisions is the fact that they are quite sizable in order to house the components necessary for a good quality picture onscreen. Another distinct disadvantage is the fact that there is a great deal of competition that varies in quality and you really need to study the various televisions before settling on any one in particular.

Other notable drawbacks to rear projection televisions are the facts that the lighting in the room affects the quality of the picture onscreen and you have a narrow viewing range. Otherwise, the low cost involved is a huge bonus to many and makes the purchase of this type of television (particularly for a home theater) the best possible choice. It always comes down to a matter of preference.

Front Projectors

These are not exactly televisions in the traditional sense of the word but they work well for this particular purpose and are perfect solutions for many home theaters. The technology for this type of viewing medium has also evolved over the last few years. Gone are the days of big bulky boxes that sat on the floor of your living room and that no one could walk in front of without seriously distorting the television view. Today’s front projectors are mounted on the ceiling and provide a nice quality of picture rather you are using a screen that is designed to maximize the quality of the picture or merely projecting onto a blank wall.

As I mentioned before there is no universal right or wrong when it comes to selecting the best television for your home theater. The thing you should pay careful attention to is which screen or which view you like best. Which type of television will offer you the most bang for your home theater buck? You should also ask yourself which level of quality can you and can you not live without? These are important questions that should help you narrow down your search for a television for your home theater.

If you are in the market for a home theater system, chances are that you have a pretty good idea of the individual components you will need in order to make your system complete. Most people find questions when it comes to specific information about the individual pieces and parts of the system. However, in an effort to educate all about home theater systems, this will be a brief break down of components that one might expect to purchase during the course of building a premium home theater system. Keep in mind that everyone will have their own specific needs and preferences and you may have some perfectly acceptable components already. This of course, will save you money on the overall purchase if you choose to keep the pieces you currently own.

First of all, there are all kinds of ‘home theater in a box’ kits on the market today. These kits are already put together in order to help you get the home theater you desire in one fell swoop. While you can get perfectly good home theater systems in this manner, I honestly believe you will get better value for your money by building your own system one component at a time. If you are impatient in a hurry or simply do not wish to spend the time researching your options then the home theater systems that are sold on the market may be a good idea for you.

Now that we’ve gotten past that, you should notice that some people consider the actual television to be a part of the home theater system. You can go many routes when selecting a television that will work with your home theater needs. It is entirely up to you what kind of television you select. I do however recommend that you seriously consider the lighting in any given room before choosing your television. Projection televisions do not do well in rooms with a great deal of light. Otherwise, go with what works within your budget and the overall look you prefer for your home theater viewing.

Sound is another important component of most home theater systems. The amount you spend on your sound system should depend entirely on how much sound impacts your enjoyment of movies. You can spend a lot of money on a good set of speakers and sound system or you can seriously cut costs by spending less on this particular component. Everything when it comes to building a home theater depends entirely upon your personal preferences and the overall system you wish to build.

In order to get the greatest benefit from your speakers you will need a receiver in order to process the sounds and present them in the best possible light. The receiver basically receives information from all manner of devices and sends the signal where you tell it to go. Your receiver is one place that most people tend to spend a good portion of their budget and with good reason. This is by far one of the most important components and one that many people do not already own.

Your DVD/DVR is another thing that can impact your viewing experience. You shouldn’t opt for a high definition DVD or DVR unless you have a high definition television and only then if you plan to purchase high definition DVDs rather than the regular DVDs you will find on the market at the moment. Doing so will only result in a waste of money while the technology is new. Instead, wait a year or two until the prices drop and upgrade slowly rather than buying the top of the line most expensive component that the remainder of your system cannot keep up with.

While this list is by no means exhaustive of everything you might wish to include in your home theater system it will provide a good start for most home theaters. Only you can set your budget and decide how much you are willing to spend on each individual component. My best advice is to start with a receiver and build your system one component at a time around your receiver.

One reason that many people who would love the benefits of a home theater avoid making the investment or even considering their options is because they live in situations that allow very little space with which to place the necessary components of a home theater system. The good news is that compact systems are growing in quality and availability as space around the world becomes more and more limited. As the population grows, the problem of space grows as well. Gone are the days filled with huge plantation style homes around the world as communities are more and more often filled to capacity with apartment buildings, condos, and homes built on compact lots in housing communities.

The average family around the world has experience the limitations of space when it comes to things such as floor speakers and bulky home theater systems. The good news is that they days of huge projectors and massive televisions stands have fallen by the wayside to make way for ceiling mounted projectors and rear projector televisions that fit tightly into corners when necessary. We also have the added convenience of wireless speakers that can be mounted on walls or in the ceiling as well as LCD and plasma televisions that can be mounted on the wall rather than taking up precious real estate on our floors.

Space might have been a mitigating factor in the past when it comes to the purchase of a home theater but with the creation of many box kits and emerging technology it is no longer a valid excuse not to move forward into this century of electronic convenience and move quality picture and sound in the comfort of your very own home. More and more people are finding that a good home theater is replacing money spent at theaters or sporting events as they can get superior quality views (and the convenience of instant replays) at home.

Whether you are one of many around the world who has put off this purchase, which will greatly improve how you view home movie viewing, there are options that are worth considering for your home theater needs when it comes to the limitations of space. Even if you live in an apartment that offers a tiny living area you can still enjoy great quality sound from a small home theater system. These systems in fact work better in small spaces than in rooms that are too large for them. Be sure to discuss your options and what might be best for small spaces when you are listening to different systems and kits in the store.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind when using wall or ceiling mounted equipment in your home theater is that you may actually find that you are freeing up more space within your room than would be occupied with your current television (this is especially true if you upgrade to a flat television that is mounted on the wall rather than a bulky rear projector television or a huge entertainment center.

The truth is you never really know what is on the market and what will work in your space until you go out there and check out your options. It is much better to go out there and see what is available than rob yourself of the enjoyment a good home theater will bring based on an assumption that very well may not be true for your home or apartment.

While there are many components that make up the average home theater system most people often overlook the importance of their televisions to the overall video and movie watching experience. As with all things in life, bigger, when it comes to televisions for your home theater, is not always better. There are many things that must be considered when selecting the best possible television for your home theater and size is only one of many.

Mass retailers show televisions in a manner that suits their purpose, which is a sale. This doesn’t mean that their methods for displaying their televisions paints those sets in a proper light for your home viewing experience. Not so long ago, a 20-inch viewing window for your television was considered huge. It was a luxury saved for those who were extremely wealthy. The truth of the matter is that if you do not sit a proper distance from your television the quality of the picture will look horrible if your set is too large.

There are good rules of thumb to consider when purchasing a television set for your room, at least where size is concerned. The rule is that you will want no more than 4″ of diagonal screen inches on your television for every foot away from the set you will be when watching cable television. The rule goes up to 5 inches per foot for satellite television or DVDs, and 6 inches per foot if you are viewing high definition television.

Of course with every rule there are exceptions. For this rule general exceptions would be two story great rooms or cathedral ceilings that might actually call for a larger television and basements or dropped ceilings that might actual be better suited for smaller televisions. You really must consider all of these things when selecting the television that will best suit your needs when it comes to your home theater and your theater set up.

Of course there is more than size to consider when it comes to the television you ultimately choose for your home theater and taste as well as space will each play important roles in the television you should choose. One important consideration is price. When you walk into the store and see all the wonderful new televisions that promise endless hours of movie watching bliss at a very hefty price tag to match. You need to be able to weed through without getting distracted by the latest and greatest of bells and whistles in order to find the set that will meet all of your movie watching needs and fall within your budget.

For this particular trip I recommend walking in with money in hand (the limit you have set) and that you leave the credit card at home. You should also carefully consider whether or not you will want an extended warranty as that will raise the base price of your television and isn’t reflected in the ‘sticker’ price. If you bring your credit card you will be tempted to overspend rather than sticking with your original budget.

Other than price you really need to carefully consider the type of television you’d like to have for your home theater. Keep in mind that you can buy larger versions of older technology for the same price you’d pay for smaller screen sizes when it comes to LCD televisions. You should also consider the size of the television you really need for this portion too. Most of us do not sit more than 12 feet from our televisions, which means you may not need quite as much television as you may have previously thought you would need. The most important thing when choosing a television is to remember that this is an investment that most of us do not make terribly often. For that reason you should expect to drop a considerable chunk of change on this particular investment in your home theater system.

Plasma televisions are becoming more and more popular in American households because of their amazing picture quality. Most people who are looking for a serious home theater start looking at plasma HDTV’s. Compared to LCD TV’s, they have much richer colors and the black and dark colors are much blacker. There are several advantages and disadvantages of owning plasma television. Learn the pro’s and con’s before you head out to the store.

Advantage #1 – Picture Quality
The main reasons people choose plasma over LCD, rear projection and front projectors is the picture quality. Because of the plasma technology, the colors displayed by plasma TV’s are superior to those of any other kind of television. Many people think that when the color black is displayed on their TV that it is actually black. However, most TV’s can’t actually display blacks. They are just dark shades of gray. Plasma TV’s produce very black blacks because of the plasma technology.

Advantage #2 – Screen Size
Plasma TV’s start in the 42 inch and higher range. If you are looking for a large TV, there are plenty of plasma options. LCD screens range from cell phone screens clear up to 65 inch televisions but a large plasma TV is typically a better buy than a LCD TV. If you are buying a plasma TV 50 inches or great, make sure you get a HDTV with 1080p resolution. 1080p is the highest possible resolution and if you are viewing a large screen TV, you will actually see the difference between 1080p and 720p. If it is a smaller TV, the difference is hardly noticeable and not worth the extra money.

Disadvantage #1 – Cost
Plasma TV’s are typically the most expensive televisions on the market. They used be nearly double or triple the price of similar LCD HDTV’s. The prices are slowly dropping due to advances in technology but you will usually pay more for a plasma TV than the same size in a LCD or rear projection television. Plasma TV’s also cost more to run because they require more power and electricity. It isn’t a major difference but over the course of a year, you might pay an extra couple hundred dollars in electricity bills.

Disadvantage #2 – Screen Size
Because plasma’s aren’t usually available in less than 42 inch screen size, you can’t get a smaller TV if you are limited to a certain size. Most flat panel owners are looking in the 30 and 40 inch range and you will find your options are somewhat limited if you are looking for a plasma television. If you are buying a smaller screen, you don’t have to have 1080p resolution. Many new TV’s come with 1080p but if you have the choice, a 720p might save you some money and you won’t even notice the difference.

If you are in the market for a home theater system chances are you are experiencing some degree of shell shock at all the options that are available in today’s market. The fact that there are so many options is both wonderful and horrible at the same time. The sheer amount of competition is working well to drive prices down for consumers. With that in mind, there are still levels of pricing according to the quality of home theater system you are selecting. On the other hand, a vast quantity of selection for many makes narrowing down the proper choice for specific needs difficult at best.

There are some things to keep in mind when purchasing a home theater system and the first of those things is to settle on a budget and stick with it. The very process of establishing a budget narrows down your options and you just may be surprised at the quality you can find within various budgets. Even more surprising to many consumers is the fact that you do not have to go with names that you know in order to get excellent quality of sound, picture, and value from your home theater system.

I highly recommend that you see each system in action that you are considering before deciding on one. I also highly suggest that you never let price alone be the deciding factor of which home theater system you purchase. If you cannot afford the system you want right now save up for another month or two in order to purchase the system that you honestly feel will be the best value for your money and your home. You will spend many hours, if you are a typical American, enjoying your home theater system, it only makes sense that you are willing to make a serious investment in getting the quality you deserve from your system. If you do not select a system that is good quality you will only end up spending more by replacing it sooner than necessary in the long run.

The next best suggestion I can make when you are selecting the proper home theater system for you and your family is to make a list of priorities when it comes to features. If you already have an excellent quality DVD player it makes no sense to pay extra for a home theater that includes a DVD player, particularly if that player would be of inferior quality. Do you need good quality sound or is the sound of marginal importance to you? There are all kinds of places you can cut costs when purchasing a home theater system and most of them are exclusively matters of taste, preference, and priority.

Knowing what you want when you begin your search for a home entertainment system is by far the best way to avoid buying a system that is ill suited for your home or your needs. If you have hearing problems and need a set of headphones in order to hear the television as it is, an expensive sound system is wasted money as far as your personal needs. If you are using a sunroom for your home theater or a room that is brightly lit, a projection television would be essentially useless for your needs. You should make every effort not to spend money where money isn’t needed and save your big-ticket purchases for items that will mean the most to your system.

Another important thing to remember when shopping around and comparing home theaters is that you do not have to make the entire purchase in one fell swoop. It is very possible to purchase one piece at a time in order to get the most for your money and truly enjoy each upgraded component as it adds new value to your existing home theater. Buying one piece at a time also helps you narrow down subsequent purchases by learning what features are needed in addition to the items that you currently possess. The most important piece of advice I can give you is this: the purpose of your home theater system is to keep you entertained so you are the only one it needs to impress.

It used to be that if you wanted the latest in high definition home theater systems, you had to be willing to pay out the nose for it. Not anymore.

Matter of fact, it’s actually pretty easy on the wallet to own a nice home theater set up. There are several great high definition television sets on the market for $1000 or less, depending on the size you want. And every day there are more producers who are willing to bring their prices down.

So what’s stopping you from getting your own home theater system? Well, it’s not as easy as dropping yourself off at the local electronics superstore to grab the latest and greatest high definition tv. There are a few things that you need to look at before you go setting yourself up with a home theater system.

One of the things that you might consider doing is making sure that the television you’re choosing is really high definition. To be considered a high definition home theater system, the television must have a minimum resolution of 1280×720 pixels. You read that right – we’ve become so fixed on high definition electronics that we have begun to measure our television sets in pixels.

Another thing to keep in mind while setting up a home theater system is checking to see how many HDMI ports are to be found on your nifty new high definition television set. Make sure there are at least two – those ports allow you to plug in your DVD player, surround sound system and anything else that you want to plug into your set. That’s important, especially if you plan on using your home theater to watch movies on Blu Ray, because the sound is going to matter.

Speaking of your sound system, you do have your home wired and ready for a nice surround sound effect to go with this home theater set up, right? If not, be prepared to shell out a little extra cash or time to set this up correctly. No matter what brand of high definition television set you purchase, without the surround sound set up, you’re really not getting a true home theater experience.

For true fans of great sound, Bose is the go-to. Small and easy to ignore visually, the sound that they produce for your home theater set up is unparalleled. While we’re on the subject of sound, you might also be interested in using your home theater to listen to some high definition radio, which is becoming increasingly popular because of the clarity of the sound.

Flat panel? Old fashioned tube-style? Mounted on the wall or sitting on a stand? The choices that have to be made may seem small to you, but they can make a big difference in the way you set up your home theater. And the way you set up your home theater for your high definition experience can make all the difference between “meh” and “WOW” when it comes to friends and family. If you’re not going to weigh all of your factors, why bother with the experience? You want a true high definition home theater. So do your homework and choose carefully, then enjoy for many years to come the experience that only real high definition can offer.

A home theater is no small investment, particularly if you are going for a good quality home theater. With that in mind there are many mistakes that people make along the way when it comes to their home theaters. What you want to do is learn from the mistakes of others rather than dooming yourself to repeat those that have been made so many times before. Below you will find information on some of the most often made mistakes when it comes to creating a great home theater for you and your family.

Windows

I’m not talking Microsoft either. One thing that is a killer for your home theater is a room full of windows. At night, every car passing by will prove distracting and during the day little can be enjoyed on your television from the sunlight pouring in. Even normal curtains allow some degree of light into the room, which will provide a distracting glare on you television screen. If you have no windowless rooms in your home you will at the very least want to install some heavy duty blackout drapes or curtains in order to prevent the glare and distraction that windows provide.

Cheap Speakers

Sound is one of the most important factors in imitating a theater quality movie viewing experience. If you have cheap speakers you will not receive the quality of sound that you will need in order to achieve that experience. The first five or ten minutes of the movie Top Gun provides one of the best sound tests I’ve ever seen. Grab a copy of the DVD and take it with you to the stores, compare speakers using that DVD and go with the set that provides the best quality of sound. It’s a good litmus test and you will be glad you did if you ever listen to a favorite movie on a friends inferior speakers.

Poor Installation

It makes no sense to invest thousands of dollars in a home theater system only to bring it home and do a poor job of installing it because you didn’t want to spring for the extra two hundred dollars for installation. Improper installation of your home theater will result in much less quality than you paid for, which makes a good quality system a complete waste of money. Pay the price now for professional installation if you have any doubts at all about your ability to properly install your system.

Not Reading Directions

On the other hand if you decide to do your own installation the number one problem is the result of not reading the instructions for not only installation but also the operation of your home theater. We may feel that we are intuitive by nature but sometimes it helps to have a roadmap to follow. Instructions for installation and operating manuals are our road maps and reading them first will not only save a great deal of time but also increase your enjoyment of your home theater.

Avoiding these common mistakes can go along way towards helping you get the most possible enjoyment from your home theater. It’s amazing how much of a difference little things can make along the way. Good luck with the selection, purchase, and installation of your home theater. I hope you enjoy many wonderful hours of movie, television, and game watching on your new system.
